Topic 1: Review of Healthy People 2030 Global Health Initiatives – Tuberculosis

Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis that primarily affects the lungs. It is spread from person to person through the air when an infected individual coughs, sneezes, or talks. According to Healthy People 2030, TB remains a global public health threat, with over 10 million people affected by TB worldwide each year, resulting in approximately 1.4 million deaths.

The goals for TB presented in Healthy People 2030 include reducing the incidence of TB in the US and globally, improving diagnosis and treatment, and addressing the social determinants of TB. In addition, the initiative aims to increase the proportion of people with TB who complete treatment and decrease the proportion of people with drug-resistant TB.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) plays a critical role in meeting the goals of Healthy People 2030 for TB. The CDC provides funding and technical assistance to state and local health departments to support TB control efforts. They also work to develop and implement policies and guidelines for TB control and prevention, and conduct research to improve TB diagnosis and treatment. Additionally, the CDC collaborates with international partners to support global TB control efforts and address the global TB epidemic.
